5 signs your BCM module is failing

12 Jul 20264 min read

The BCM (Body Control Module) coordinates almost everything electrical that isn't the engine: locks, lights, windows, alarm, sometimes even remote start. When it starts to fail, it rarely happens all at once — first it drops isolated signals that many owners write off as "old car stuff" or blame on the battery. Catching them early is the difference between a 20-minute diagnostic and getting stranded.

1. Locks won't close (or close on their own)

If the car locks and unlocks on its own, or the remote stops responding intermittently, the BCM is usually the first suspect — not the remote's battery. It's the most common sign our customers show up with.

2. Lights flickering with no pattern

Dash lights, interior lights, turn signals flickering without you touching anything — especially if it happens across several circuits at once, not just one bulb. A burnt-out bulb is a $10 problem. A failing BCM mishandling signals is something else entirely.

3. Power windows that are slow or uneven

When one window starts moving slower than the others, or stops halfway, it's usually not the window motor — it's the module no longer sending it the right signal.

4. Dashboard warnings that come and go

Check engine, TPMS, or airbag lights that turn on, turn off on their own, and come back days later with no clear pattern are a classic sign of faulty communication between modules — the BCM is usually somewhere in the middle of that conversation.

5. Remote start stops working (or works sometimes)

If your car has factory remote start and it started failing randomly — sometimes it fires up, sometimes it doesn't respond — it's worth diagnosing the original module before spending on a new aftermarket one.

What do we do differently?

Most shops, seeing these symptoms, go straight to quoting a new BCM from the dealer — which on many models runs over $800-1200 for the part alone, plus programming. We diagnose at the component level: most of the time the problem is a capacitor, a burnt-out output driver, or a cold solder joint, not the whole module. We repair that directly, at the same factory performance, for a fraction of the cost.

  • Diagnosis in under 20 minutes
  • No charge if we determine it isn't repairable
  • Mobile Lab: if you prefer, we come to your garage or shop
