5 signs your Power Stroke ECM is failing (and it's not the DPF)

29 Jul 20265 min read

When a Ford Power Stroke drops into Derate, the near-automatic reflex at a lot of shops is to point at the DPF: clean it, replace it, clear the codes. Sometimes that works. But a good share of the cases we see are actually the PCM — not the emissions system — and swapping more exhaust parts won't fix anything.

1. Derate comes right back after you clear the codes

If you cleaned or replaced the DPF, cleared the codes, and Derate returns on the same trip or the next day, the likely cause isn't the filter — it's the module misreading the signal, or losing communication with the sensors that control it.

2. The PCM won't talk to the scanner

A dirty DPF doesn't stop a scanner from reading the module. If your tool can't connect, can't read, or can't program, that's a module symptom — not a sensor or filter one.

3. A permanent check-engine light that no clear holds

DPF/DEF/NOx codes that come right back the moment you clear them, cycle after cycle, are a classic PCM failure pattern — especially if you've already replaced sensors and the pattern hasn't changed.

4. Failure right after water: a flooded street, heavy rain, pressure washing

If the symptom started right after crossing a flooded street, a heavy downpour, or a misdirected pressure wash, suspect the module before the emissions system — moisture attacks connectors and boards, not the particulate filter.

5. Intermittent no-starts or shutdowns with no clear code

A struggling DPF doesn't shut a truck off while driving or cause intermittent no-starts with no code. When you see that, you're looking at a module with a specific electrical fault, not a particulate filter problem.

When you don't need a full ECM swap

We cover the 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L, 6.7L (2011-2019, open Bosch module) and the 6.7L 2020+ (locked PCM, needs a specialized unlock). In most cases we diagnose on-site in under 20 minutes and repair the module at the component level — same factory-grade result, without the 2-3 week wait of a dealer ECM swap.

  • On-site diagnostics with the Mobile Lab, no towing the truck
  • Component-level repair instead of a full replacement whenever possible
  • Coverage for every Power Stroke generation, including the locked 2020+ PCM
