When it fails, the car may not start, start and die, go into limp mode, or simply lose power with no clear code.
Replacing it through the dealer isn't cheap. A complete ECM/PCM swap averages $1,100 to $1,300, with the OEM part running $800 to $1,500 on volume vehicles and up to $3,000 for a new branded unit. By segment, a mainstream vehicle — Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia — lands between $600 and $1,800; a truck with integrated PCM and TCM, $800 to $2,200; and a European luxury car, $1,500 to $3,500 or more. There's also a common trap with cheap remanufactured units: most ship unprogrammed, so you still pay $150 to $300 at the dealer to sync them to the VIN and keys. Repairing the original board avoids that entire loop.

The most common failures, component by component
The vast majority of ECUs that come into the shop don't have the whole board damaged — they have one specific component burned out or degraded. The most common failure points are:
- Voltage regulator: feeds the internal circuits at a regulated 5V; when it fails, the ECU loses its sensor reference and the car shows erratic, inconsistent faults
- Electrolytic capacitors: dry out or bulge with heat and age; a bulging capacitor or dried residue at its base is a clear sign of failure and causes erratic engine management behavior
- Corroded connector pins: moisture oxidizes the harness contacts, raising circuit resistance and causing voltage drops and intermittent signals that look like (but aren't) a sensor fault
- Output driver transistors: handle high-current loads like injectors and coils; when one burns out, the specific circuit it controls stops responding even though the rest of the ECU works fine
- Visible burn marks or discoloration on the board: almost always near regulators, power transistors, or fuses — a sign of thermal stress or a localized overcurrent event
The Miami factor: humidity and hurricanes
In South Florida this isn't just a technical curiosity: flooded streets during hurricane season and the extreme condensation from air conditioning in our tropical climate are lethal to the ECU. If your car drove through a flooded street and stalled, don't assume the engine is destroyed or that the ECU is a total loss — we use ultrasonic cleaning and micro-soldering to stop active corrosion before it's too late. Repair, cloning, or Plug & Play
Depending on the case, we repair the specific damaged component on the original board, clone the data to a replacement unit, or deliver a ready-to-install Plug & Play solution. Cloning isn't copy-and-paste: it requires transferring the original ECU's EEPROM/flash memory byte-for-byte — which holds calibration data, mileage, and, on most modern cars, the immobilizer's security data (VIN, sync key with the key module) — to the replacement unit, so the car accepts it as the original without re-pairing keys or a trip to the dealer. We always look for the option that gets your car back to factory performance, at a fraction of what the dealer charges for a new ECU.
