Airbag light on and you never crashed: check the carpet

A dealer diagnosis for an airbag light on a 2019 Sprinter or a modern work platform usually ends in a $1,200 to $1,800 quote to replace the SRS module, plus online coding hours. The dealership assumes the board is gone. In South Florida, though, a good share of these modules weren't damaged by an impact: they got wet from above, with condensation water from the vehicle's own air conditioning.

Airbag light stuck on with no prior impact

The module locks itself out after reading an anomalous value from its own inertial sensor.

Why the module sits right under the evaporator

The SRS module has to be rigidly anchored at the geometric center of the chassis — normally over the transmission tunnel or the center floor — so its gyroscopes measure impact forces accurately. That position, ideal for the physics, happens to sit directly beneath the HVAC evaporator box.

In Florida the A/C runs at full capacity twelve months a year and produces liters of condensate that must leave the chassis through a rubber hose. That hose clogs with dust, mud, calcified pollen and bacterial colonies the heat accelerates. The internal tray overflows and cold water drips straight onto the module's metal housing.

Capillary action pulls the moisture past the seals of the multipin connector. Inside, water plus permanent voltage produce galvanic corrosion: the MEMS accelerometer oxidizes along its measurement traces and returns voltage drops on the reference signal. The microcontroller reads that resistive value as an inertial sensor collapse and, rather than risk an accidental deployment while you drive, writes a hardware failure flag into EEPROM and cuts CAN communication. The lockout is preventive and correct: the module is protecting itself.

Non-negotiable rule: this recovery only proceeds if there was no pyrotechnic deployment. If the bags or the seatbelt pretensioners fired in an accident, the internal structure and the firing transistors are considered compromised and the module gets replaced, no exceptions. If the lockout is purely logical, from a wet short with no physical deployment, the board is recoverable and the system goes back to being operational.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (W906 / W907)

The module sits in the plastic base of the center console. Delivery units that keep the A/C running through 12-hour shifts are chronic victims: they produce condensate continuously, all year.

Ford F-150, Super Duty and Explorer

The Restraint Control Module sits under the front center seat or the console. A clogged drain — or simply a drink spilled in the cupholders — immediately sulfates the board's input pins.

Jeep Grand Cherokee and RAM

The ORC module on the transmission tunnel corrodes almost instantly when drain lines collapse in summer, or when the vehicle crosses a flooded street.

How we recover it

  1. Step 01

    Bench triage

    We open the unit in an ESD environment and measure impedance on the logic rails, to confirm there's no cross short that already burned the processor.

  2. Step 02

    Ultrasonic chemical cavitation at 40 kHz

    We submerge the board in industrial dielectric solvents; the microbubbles collapse and strip salinity, mold and sulfate embedded under the accelerometer, with no mechanical friction.

  3. Step 03

    Vacuum dehydration

    We bake the circuit at 140 °F in a convection chamber to drive out microscopic water trapped between layers.

  4. Step 04

    Micro-soldering and reinforcement

    Under a microscope we resolder the connector pins attacked by galvanic arcing and replace SMD capacitors showing current leakage.

  5. Step 05

    Logic reset on the simulator

    We power the module on the bench and clear the hardware failure flags the water left in EEPROM, preserving the VIN and the occupant classification calibration.

The module returns to your body shop or your door ready to plug in. Once the yellow factory harness is reconnected, the system runs its self-check and turns the cluster light off, with no reprogramming and no forced dealer calibration.
