Parking or low beams switching on by themselves at night with the switch OFF and the alarm armed: the output transistor is stuck closed and feeds the circuit with nobody commanding it.
Where water gets into an S197
On the S197 chassis the interior fuse box and body computer is bolted vertically to the lower post of the right A-pillar, at the passenger's feet. The source isn't a car wash or a cracked windshield: under the wiper grille there are rubber valves meant to drain rainwater to the ground. In Florida they plug with dirt, pollen and palm debris.
When a downpour hits, the water can't drain, the level rises inside the cowl and it enters the cabin through the fresh air duct seal. It runs down behind the dash and cascades directly onto the module's upper multipin connectors. Capillary action pulls it between the housings and into the stack of boards interconnected by pressure pins.
Because the module takes direct 12V battery power at all times, water with dissolved salts sets off immediate galvanic corrosion. Copper sulfate bridges the control terminals to the power outputs of the intelligent switches, the transistor is left in a permanent closed short, and the exterior lights stay fed forever.
