A wet module — from street flooding, storm surge, a windshield leak, or a misdirected engine pressure wash — isn't always a lost cause. Water itself rarely destroys the component: the real damage comes from the corrosion that sets in if it isn't cleaned in time, and from localized short circuits that are genuinely repairable. What sends a flooded car to the junkyard is almost never the physics of the damage. It's the arithmetic of whoever evaluates it.

That arithmetic is worth understanding, because in Florida it leaves a mark you can't undo. When a shop quotes replacing every module throwing a code, the total climbs fast: a PCM, a BCM and an airbag module at dealer pricing clear $3,000 before anyone touches a harness. And once the repair estimate reaches 80% of the vehicle's value, the insurer declares a total loss and the title gets branded salvage or flood with the FLHSMV — a permanent brand that guts resale value even if the car ends up running perfectly. So the right diagnosis isn't only a cost decision: it determines whether the vehicle keeps a clean title. Sudden or intermittent electrical failure after water exposure

A film of dissolved salts left behind after the water dries keeps absorbing moisture from the air, and that residue bridges adjacent traces until it shorts the circuit.

Physical evidence of water exposure

  • Visible corrosion or greenish-white powder on connectors, grounds or boards
  • A water line or fine silt under the carpet, along the seat rails, or in the bottom of the glovebox
  • Persistent damp or mildew smell in the cabin, especially with the A/C running

Why the failure shows up weeks later

A circuit board comes out of the water and seems to work. What stayed behind is a film of dissolved salts and minerals, and those salts are hygroscopic: they continuously pull moisture out of the air. In South Florida, where relative humidity stays high year-round, that film never fully dries — it maintains a permanent electrolyte between adjacent traces sitting at different potentials, and that's where galvanic corrosion starts. The result is leakage currents of a few microamps that grow week after week until they become a hard short. That's why the time to act is before the symptom appears, and why a car that dried out and seems fine isn't necessarily a car that got away with it.

Fresh water vs. salt water (storm surge)

Not all water damage is equal. Rainwater or street flooding is corrosive but relatively predictable. Storm surge is a different category: sodium chloride multiplies the conductivity of the residue, attacks the board's protective conformal coating directly, and keeps corroding connectors and grounds for months after the car dried out. A vehicle that took salt water up to floor level needs immediate intervention; one that took fresh water to the same level allows for a plan. We map the type of exposure, the height of the water line, and how much time has passed before diagnosing, because that changes how urgent the work is and which modules are worth rescuing first.

Where water gets in, and which module goes first

  • Cowl drains (the tray under the windshield) plugged with leaves: water overflows into the footwell, exactly where the BCM or interior fuse box lives
  • Blocked sunroof drains: water runs down the A-pillar and reaches comfort modules and the dash harness
  • Separated door membranes: they soak the door modules and the bulkhead pass-through connector
  • Modules under the seat and under the carpet — occupancy sensors, seat module, audio amplifier and, on several platforms, the SRS module itself
  • Engine bay: pressure washing aimed at the PCM/ECM, the fuse box, or the TCM connectors
  • Trunk and spare tire well: air suspension modules, amplifiers and keyless entry modules that sit below the water line

Here it isn't an isolated event: it's an operating condition. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, seasonal king tides flood streets across Miami-Dade and Broward without a drop of rain, and humidity stays high all twelve months. Add coastal salt air, which corrodes connectors and grounds on vehicles that never got wet at all. The practical consequence: in this region a car with a water history doesn't stabilize on its own over time — it degrades, and the repair window is shorter than in any other market in the country.

Technical depth by module type

Comfort and body modules (BCM, SJB, TIPM, BSI/UCH, SAM): first to go

It's no accident that these fail first: they're mounted in the footwell or under the dash — the lowest point in the cabin that's still electronics.

  • Stellantis (Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, RAM): the TIPM and BCM are frequently exposed to moisture, and the classic pattern is a no-start, a fuel pump that stops responding, and wipers with a mind of their own
  • Ford and Lincoln: the Smart Junction Box (SJB) under the dash and the Battery Junction Box in the engine bay account for most water-intrusion cases on the brand
  • Mercedes-Benz and BMW: intrusion reaches the front and rear SAM modules, or the FEM/BDC units, almost always through water entering at the A-pillar, and it takes down comfort functions and drains the battery
  • Imported Peugeot, Citroën and Renault: on BSI and UCH units, corrosion typically produces immobilizer and lighting faults
Engine and transmission management (ECM/PCM and TCM)

Hit mainly by high-pressure engine washing and by driving through standing water. We recover water-damaged Bosch, Continental, Delphi and Siemens units, and when the original hardware is beyond saving we extract the security data — immobilizer and VIN — and clone it to a replacement unit. That skips the expensive step: most remanufactured computers on the market ship unprogrammed, so a cheap replacement still ends up at the dealer paying $150 to $300 just for VIN programming.

Active safety and ADAS: why a modern car loses more

A twenty-year-old vehicle had half a dozen modules; a current one has dozens, and many of them — camera controllers, radar units, parking sensors, airbag/SRS modules — sit under seats, inside bumpers and behind low panels.
