Interior or exterior lights that flicker, stay on with the key out, or don't come on at all: the relays and drivers for those outputs live inside the body control module, and when one degrades the command gets stuck on or never arrives.
U0140 and lost BCM communication
On 2014-2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) and its Dodge Durango platform-mate, a U0140 ("lost communication with body control module") code is common, and it's often not a dead BCM at all — Chrysler has released software updates through dealers to fix communication glitches between modules, and moisture or corrosion at the BCM connectors in the driver's footwell is just as common a cause. We check both before condemning the module itself.
Why these modules fail
The BCM sits low in the cabin on most of these platforms — often behind a kick panel or under the dash in the driver's footwell — which puts it in the path of water intrusion from a clogged cowl drain, a bad windshield seal, or a flooded floor mat. Corrosion on the board or connector pins produces exactly the kind of scattered, multi-system symptoms owners describe, because a corroded pin doesn't fail cleanly — it fails intermittently, on some circuits and not others. On older Chrysler platforms (Cirrus/Stratus/Breeze, and the 2004-2007 Grand Cherokee/Durango/Charger generation), we still see BCMs with well-documented parasitic-drain behavior, effectively "waking up" overnight and draining the battery.
