Since automatic emergency braking is now standard equipment across essentially the entire new-vehicle fleet, the ABS module has become the actuator for a driver assistance system, not just a brake component.
That carries a concrete consequence most shops overlook: after the module is worked on, the vehicle is still drivable, but critical functions like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking stay disabled until calibration is complete. On several platforms that calibration also requires a specific drive cycle — straight road, between 35 and 56 mph, for 10 to 30 minutes, with traffic and roadside objects present — for the system to relearn. Technical command of modern braking systems (2015-2026)
GM: the module has to match your RPO code
On GM trucks and SUVs the ABS/StabiliTrak module has to match your specific vehicle's RPO code (JL4, for example) — it isn't a blindly interchangeable part.
- T1 platform (2019 onward): current-generation Silverado and Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade, plus the newest 2500/3500 HD trucks, where ADAS integration is total and programming requires dealer-level tooling
- K2XX (2014-2018) and GMT900 (2007-2014): generations with high circulating volume in Florida and well-documented failure profiles
- GMT800 (2003-2006): RPO compatibility spans two distinct chassis generations, each with its own EBCM even when the body looks similar — a 2007+ module with JL4 (part aliases like 20866915 or 25834221) is not interchangeable with one from the previous generation
- That's why we ask for the full RPO code or the VIN before quoting, never just the year and model
Ford and Stellantis (Ram, Jeep, Dodge)
The two domestic platforms with the most specific factory lockouts on the market.
- Ford Super Duty (F-250 through F-550, 2014-2024) and F-150 (2021 onward): codes C0020 or U3003, with symptoms as odd as the horn sounding by itself or the battery dead overnight, usually originate from water ingress in the Battery Junction Box (BJB) rather than the ABS module — documented in TSB 23-2133. We actively check for that pattern before condemning the module
- RAM 1500 DT and 2500/3500 (2019 onward): work on the modern systems getting past the Security Gateway (SGW) lockouts that block third-party tool access
- RAM 1500/2500/3500 (Kelsey-Hayes, 1998-2005): the typical fault isn't the board but corrosion in the main connector, so we start there. Also, if your Ram was built between September 12 and December 11, 2005, there's a specific NHTSA recall (06V038000, Chrysler campaign F05) for an ABS ECU that could lock the rear wheels prematurely — we verify that as part of the diagnosis
German premium brands and the VAG group

In most cases the hydraulic side (pump, valves) is in good condition — the problem is the electronic board controlling it. We separate it, repair the damaged component and reinstall it, avoiding the cost of a complete new ABS unit.
