After an impact hard enough to trigger the crash sensor — even a moderate one that never inflated the airbags — the SRS module records the collision data and locks the system, leaving the airbag light on permanently and, in several states, failing inspection. That's a different situation from a module that actually deployed: we tell you up front which of the two you have before touching anything.

The cost difference is significant and worth being clear about. Replacing the module at the dealer typically runs $1,000 to $1,500 in parts and labor, and depending on the model the market average ranges from $942 to $1,707. On top of that, a replacement module — new or used — still has to be programmed to the VIN, which means another dealer visit. A bench-level reset on your original unit avoids both: there's no part to buy and no VIN to reprogram.

Airbag/SRS light on permanently in the dash, and it won't clear with a normal scan: the module stored the impact record in its internal memory, and that data isn't cleared by reading codes — the memory itself has to be rewritten.

Reset vs. replace — the distinction that matters

This is a reset job only if the airbags, the seat belt pretensioners and every other pyrotechnic device never actually fired. In that case the module is physically intact — it's only locked electronically by the recorded crash event, and a bench-level reset clears that crash data, removes the lockout, and returns the module to factory state without touching the VIN or the existing configuration. If the airbags or pretensioners did deploy, the module — along with the deployed components — has to be replaced, not reset. We verify that distinction first; a module that went through a real deployment isn't something we reset, and neither is anyone else doing this responsibly, because it has to be verified against an entire safety system rather than just an electronic flag.

Command of safety microprocessors (2015-2026)

Domestic platforms (Ford RCM, GM SDM, Chrysler ORC)

GM's SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module) locks its crash data block after any event that trips it; a Tech 2, GDS2 or MDI can't remove that lockout even on a non-deployment event — it takes a bench-level reset of the module's memory. Ford's RCM (Restraint Control Module) behaves similarly: it can record a crash event without any airbag inflating, and Ford doesn't allow that flag to be cleared with basic scan tools, only with a proper crash data reset or module replacement and reprogramming. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM use an ORC (Occupant Restraint Controller) with the same underlying logic. The pattern repeats across every brand: the module protects itself from being reset over a real deployment, and that protection is intentional.

German premium brands (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VAG group)

BMW and MINI: reset of ACSM (Advanced Crash Safety Module) generations 4 and 5, including clearing pedestrian protection records and pyrotechnic battery cable (BST) deactivations. VAG group (VW, Audi, Porsche): memory clearing on SPC and Infineon processors across the MQB platform, resolving permanent frontal impact lockouts. Mercedes-Benz: work on Bosch and Temic units, with restoration following pretensioner activation and retention tensioning modules.

High-volume Asian platforms

Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia make up a large share of Miami's fleet, and their SRS modules follow the same self-protection principle as the domestic brands: the event is written to memory and a scan tool won't clear it. We work direct MCU and EEPROM reading on the bench across these platforms, including hybrid models, where the SRS module also coexists with the high-voltage system.

Rebuilt vehicles, body shops and salvage (B2B)

Florida carries a high volume of rebuilt and salvage-title vehicles, and a significant share arrive from auction with the SRS module locked from the original event. On these units, OBD port access is automatically blocked after the impact, so the only path is direct bench rewriting of the crash data block. It's the service most used by the body shops, rebuilders and used-car dealers we work with across Miami-Dade and Broward — with a technical report included to back the repair to the end customer.

We diagnose whether the module has genuine physical or pyrotechnic damage (in which case it needs replacement, not a reset) or only a recorded crash event with no deployment (in which case we reset it). No simulators, no resistors

This is worth stating outright because the market is full of dangerous shortcuts: we don't use airbag simulators or resistors bridging the circuit to kill the dash light. Those tricks leave the warning light off and the restraint system inoperable, which is precisely the worst of both worlds — the driver believes they're protected and they aren't. What we do is clean the original software so the module genuinely works again and the shop can install new hardware with full confidence.

Frequently asked questions

The airbags deployed — can you still reset the module?

No. If the airbags or pretensioners actually deployed, the module and the deployed components have to be replaced, not reset — that's a safety matter, not a commercial decision.

Does the reset erase the mileage or other vehicle data?

No — we isolate and remove only the collision record. The VIN and the vehicle configuration stay intact.

Will I pass inspection or be able to clear a rebuilt title after the reset?

Yes, that's exactly the point — a locked SRS module causes an immediate fail in several states, including the inspection to clear a rebuilt title, and the reset removes the electronic lockout with no trace of the recorded event.
