The real weak point: the connector, not always the board

On these diesel V6 engines (OM642/OM651 in the Sprinter, and the VM Motori-derived block sharing the same Bosch module in the EcoDiesel) one well-documented failure path starts outside the PCM itself: the camshaft position sensor seal dries out or cracks, engine oil wicks up the harness, and reaches the module connector, shorting it out from the inside. To the naked eye, the result looks identical to a board failure — which is why we check the connector and harness before writing off the whole module.

Why diagnosis doesn't stop at the module

On the EcoDiesel, a cracked EGR cooler — the reason behind a 2019 factory recall covering roughly 108,000 RAM 1500 trucks — lets coolant leak into the engine and throws emissions codes that look a lot like an electrical PCM failure. Before we call a module repair done, we confirm there isn't a parallel mechanical issue, because if there is, the symptom comes right back even with a perfect module.
