The BCM is the computer that runs the body of the vehicle: lights, locks, windows, wipers, alarm, the immobilizer interface, and the permission for the electrical network to go to sleep once you shut the car off. It doesn't control the engine, which is why almost nobody suspects it — but half the functions you use every day depend on it.

When it starts failing, it doesn't fail one thing at a time: three or four unrelated-looking symptoms show up in the same week, each gets diagnosed separately, and healthy parts end up being replaced. The clue is in the set, not in any single fault.

Lights staying on with the car shut off and locked

A power stage inside the module is stuck conducting, and the column switch has nothing to do with the behavior.

The battery isn't the problem, it's the symptom

This is the call that spends the most money on batteries that were fine. The car sits overnight, won't start in the morning, the battery gets replaced, it holds for three weeks and it happens all over again. Nobody measures the parasitic draw, which is the only figure that settles it: a healthy vehicle with everything asleep settles into the tens of milliamps. When a BCM circuit stays energized with the car off, that number climbs and no new battery makes up for it.

That draw won't be found by going through accessories, because it doesn't come from an accessory: it comes from inside the module. Which is why the right order is measure first, buy second.

Heat, humidity and salt water: why they fail sooner here

The BCM lives inside the cabin, behind the dash or in the passenger kick panel, and that's exactly where water ends up when the windshield cowl drains clog with leaves and dust. Moisture settles into the connectors, with the pins under permanent voltage, and electrolysis starts: copper dissolves and conductive bridges form between pins and ground.

In South Florida that process runs faster than in dry climates, from the combination of sustained high temperatures and ambient humidity. And there's a failure mode that belongs to us: launching a boat with the trailer harness still plugged in pushes salt water into an energized circuit, which is the quickest way we know to burn a power stage. That's why we see body module failures on younger cars with fewer miles than the national average would suggest.

One module, many names

Every brand calls it something different and splits it up differently, but the job is the same. At General Motors it's the BCM; Ford calls it the SJB or GEM, sometimes split across two units; European makers call it the Body Computer; and on Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler and RAM, power distribution and much of this functionality lives inside the TIPM, which has its own page because its best-known failure is a different one.

The platforms we see most

General Motors: Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon, Corvette and Camaro

The dominant pattern is parasitic drain: the module won't let the network sleep and the car is flat in two or three days. On Corvette and Camaro it's the number one reason people call us, and it's almost never the battery.

Ford and Lincoln: SJB and GEM on F-150, Super Duty, Mustang and Explorer

Here water runs the show. A leak at the A-pillar or the kick panel soaks the unit, and the result is lights coming on by themselves at 3 a.m., erratic locks and a dead battery. A damp passenger carpet is the first tell.

FCA: Pacifica, Grand Caravan and Town & Country

Sliding door modules that stop responding after a flood or a leak, and body functions that go down alongside the TIPM. We establish which of the two units actually failed before touching either.

Toyota, Honda and Nissan

Integrated body units and integration relays with quieter symptoms: elevated parasitic draw, interior lights that won't go out, and keys that stop being recognized after a deep discharge.

Delivery vans and fleet units

Wear tracks service, not age: hundreds of door cycles a day punish the power stages. When a fleet brings in several units with the same picture, it's usually the same failure repeated.

Component-level repair, no VIN or key reprogramming

We work on the original board: the power stage that shorted, the corroded connector, the broken trace or the corrupted memory block. The VIN, the vehicle configuration and the immobilizer code travel with the unit, so the car starts again on the keys you already have and with no online programming session. When a board is beyond recovery, we clone the data onto a replacement unit before shipping it, so it goes in Plug & Play.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need new keys after the repair?

No. We repair the original board or, if it's beyond recovery, clone the memory onto the replacement unit. The immobilizer code, the VIN and the configuration go with it, so the vehicle still recognizes the keys you already have.

I cleared the drains and dried everything out. Is that enough?

It's the step without which nothing lasts, but it doesn't replace the repair. Once water has been in there, active corrosion on the pins keeps spreading after everything dries. The right order is to repair the unit and clear the drains before fitting it.

How do I know it's the BCM and not each thing separately?

By the set and by the timing. Three or four different faults appearing in the same week, with high parasitic draw and intermittent loss-of-communication codes, point to a single cause. One constant, repeatable symptom with the rest of the car behaving normally points at that circuit's own component.
